Skeleton Crew, which arrived on Disney+ this week, is drenched in fun. It’s a kid-centered Star Wars adventure that, so far, catapults four adolescent suburban kids and a droid on a spaceship that brings them to unknown parts of the galaxy.

Skeleton Crew is described as a Goonies -inspired Amblin-style Star Wars series that follows the journey of four kids “who make a mysterious discovery on their seemingly safe home planet, then get lost in a strange and dangerous galaxy,

Set in the same timeframe as The Mandalorian, Skeleton Crew follows a group of young people who find themselves lost in space.

So it’s not that much of a surprise to learn that the upcoming Star Wars series Skeleton Crew, available beginning December 3 to anyone with a Disney+ subscription, if being described in shorthand as The Goonies In Space,

The beleaguered Disney Star Wars franchise has managed to find itself a hit.

Skeleton Crew is approaching the space opera a little differently. It feels as if every new Star Wars thing either tries that and ends up searching for an audience or is so cloyingly loyal to the established lore that it is closer to bashing action figures together than telling a story.

Casting kids in any project, big or small, comes with its own risks. Mercifully, Jon Watts – the co-creator of upcoming Star Wars series Skeleton Crew – had some pitch-perfect words of wisdom to fall back on when it came to populating his cast with Gen Alpha actors.
