The portal is directly responsible for Michael Penix Jr. becoming a Husky legend while leading Washington to the College Football Playoff. It’s also the cause — along with a head coach departure — of last offseason’s mass exodus that dipped Washington from the sport’s runner-up to a participant in the upcoming Sun Bowl.

Washington suffered its first transfer portal defection on Monday as starting punter Jack McCallister announced he will leave the Huskies.

Kahlee Tafai, who started UW's final four regular-season games at left tackle, announced he will enter the transfer portal on Monday.

Gaard Memmelaar will spend his final season of college football elsewhere following a five-year career with the Washington Huskies. A former three-star recruit in the 2020 class, Memmelaar didn't see his first action until 2022.

Gaard Memmelaar always has been one of the feistiest, funniest and strongest University of Washington football players on the roster. None of that, however, apparently is enough to keep him with the Huskies going forward as the 11-game starter this season -- Gaard at left offensive guard -- on Monday entered the transfer portal amid a flurry of several teammates going in a similar path.
